Yeghishe Charents \u201cLand of Nairi\u201d is dedicated to the author\u2019s hometown, Kars, where he spent his adolescence. After the city\u2019s decline, Charents wrote about its final years, portraying Kars as a symbol of loss. The text intertwines the comic and the tragic against political and historical circumstances. During and after World War I, the city is depicted as a stage for clashes between Eastern and Western, conservative and liberal ideas.
\u201cLand of Nairi\u201d was published four times during Charents\u2019 lifetime and posthumously re-edited twice, with numerous reprints. In this edition, the novel appears for the first time in the author\u2019s final edited version, reviewed against previous editions and accompanied by the most extensive annotations. <\/p>\n
