Description
The autobiographical novel “Mad Toy” reflects the chaos of early twentieth-century Buenos Aires. Its hero, Silvio Astier, is a clever, book-loving boy expelled from school, who feels deeply humiliated by his poverty and strives by all means to break free from its grip. Yet after each futile attempt, as his plans fail one by one, he sinks deeper into bleak pessimism, realizing that he cannot escape the oppressive society around him—feeling like fate’s furious toy.
